The Smiling Elephant Project by Chirag Chung
The Yim Chang (Elephant Smiling) was established by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to remove elephants roaming the streets of Bangkok, and return to their natural environment or nearby. The BMA is targeting the mahout of Bangkok that lead to these gentle beasts all over the city asking for coins and tricks tourist dollars.
City streets are no place for an elephant of any size. Recently, a baby elephant was walking through the city of Rayong, when he walked into an open sewer. Fortunately, the baby elephant was rescued unharmed after a few hours with the help of a bulldozer to dig a hole big enough for him to leave. Unfortunately, the baby elephant get to go back to his life of slavery that ask for money.
The Bangkok Chang Yim project aims to eliminate all the elephants of Bangkok in a year. They made their first big step yesterday with the purchase of Pang Bua Kham, an elephant 30 years, who is blind in one eye. Owner Pang Bua Kham, a mahout Bangkok, was paid 300,000 baht (approximately $ 8,000.00) for the elephant be transported to the National Elephant Institute Lampang, where he lived the rest of days is in a quiet environment. The hope is that some elephants, at least the younger ones, can be reintroduced to their natural habitat, while the older elephants adequate housing can be found at places like the National Elephant.
The BMA believes that the majority of elephants roaming Bangkok can be purchased from the owners of 300,000 baht each and they have created a bank account with Krungthai bank to receive donations for this cause. In just over a week after the bank has already received 800,000 baht (approximately $ 24,000.00).
This course is a small solution to a very big problem. Elephants are used in every major city by their owners to make a living from tourist dollars. Hopefully the efforts of BMA in Bangkok will be successful and capture other cities so this issue can finally be one of the last. Until that day there will be more stories like baby elephant story over and sad ones like the elephant that died last week in the province of Chonburi, when he entered a bass guitar hanging live line and was electrocuted.
If you plan to visit Thailand and execute these gentle giants in the streets of Bangkok or any other city, please resist the temptation to pay for the experience of feeding or taking a picture with them. They are beautiful creatures, but there are places much more humane and appropriate where you can get to know the elephants of Thailand better.
Unusual Daffodil Stories by Bjorn Iafeta
The stories always interest me flowers and daffodils are particularly interesting. Did you know that if you keep chickens, you can not bring daffodils into the house. An old saying in Herfordshire UK tells us that if you bring daffodils inside when the hens are sitting, not the chickens will live births. The opposite of this, in Devon, says the number of chicks hatched and raised to be the same as the number of flower stems of daffodils that come into the house in the area earlier in the year. In Europe, the colonies of daffodil often indicate an ancient religious site. Apparently, the daffodils planted by the inhabitants monastery and years after the disappearance of the buildings, plants continue to grow.
The family of Narcissus or daffodil is poisonous and that historians tell us that knowledge bulb mortally wounded Roman soldiers ate a few bulbs. The bulb would work its wonder drug and the soldier would die without pain. I've never tried to eat more than I have been told not to worry about their kids eat because they are one of the most vile tasting spots around. The vile taste is nature's way of protecting them from predators.
Now, a lesser known epithet when applied to soldiers is called a daffodil. Apparently, this means that they are pleasing to the eye but yellow to the core. This term was apparently used in the British official correspondence during World War II and caused a bit of a diplomatic issue between the British and Australians. The British said it was the Australians who lost daffodils Singapore and Australia, says the true nature of the problem was British leadership.
Whatever the history, enjoy its bright yellow daffodils in the spring.

Successful Business in Thailand – What Does it Take? by Rashmi S Redfern
What owners western most commercially successful in Thailand have in common? Well, they have many things in common, but the three most egregious and obvious are the discipline, patience and ability to relate with people effectively. What have these three skills could be called common knowledge for any business owner in the world, but in even greater demand in Thailand. Business in Thailand requires these things to a man, without them the long-term success.
Why is this and what's important discipline in Thailand? Discipline is an absolute desire to do things and to complete a mission without understanding. Traps heady life in Bangkok or anywhere in Thailand that offers can be overwhelming without this ability.
Foreigners coming to Thailand with a plan can quickly lose focus of all bars, night life activities, and women are now available.
Westerners who arrive without a plan and without direction (thinking it will create a business plan below) is likely to be absorbed by the relaxed Thai lifestyle. Postpone it until tomorrow can quickly become not do everything. Those who fall into this category aimlessly through the streets of wonder Bangkok, are at every party and gathering or elbows on the table in a bar telling stories of bar girls.
Many can overcome the aforementioned situations to realize their situation and do something about it, either by getting back on the tracks and remember why you came to Thailand in the first place or building a solid business plan.
Patience second, is necessary. Doing business in Thailand requires self-control when it comes to Thailand in positions of authority, especially in a difficult situation. Corruption is deeply rooted in Thailand, but standing firm in a business transaction that has obviously gone wrong without losing control has a great ability. When you find yourself in this situation, be sure to note the differences in the contract, have your boss, let him know that the local newspapers, police, embassies, and even a lawyer can be contacted. Thailand do not like losing face or have their problems made public and many will reverse or renegotiate if faced with the options mentioned above.
Finally, networking with others is as important as the discipline and patience. Thailand is a very viral community and networking with others is easy. However, using contacts to efficiently build a business is another story. If you are a great resource, expand and do not let sit idle.
Finally, business as seriously as you would at home. Stay away from traps, patience, networking with others, and successful business in Thailand will only be an experience away.
